Adani Ports has confirmed that it is to jointly develop a major transhipment hub at Mundra port in India, where it already has a significant profile, through its Adani International Container Terminal Private Limited (AICTPL) division. The intention is to make Mundra Port a hub serving the Middle East and South Asia, as well as the local market. Adani says that as a result of the agreed investment in infrastructure and equipment it expects that Mundra will become India’s largest containerport with a total annual handling capacity of 6.6 million teu.
AICTPL is a 50:50 joint venture with Terminal Investment Ltd (TIL), an arm of Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the second largest shipping line in the world. Upon completion, the expansion of AICTPL will make it India’s largest individual container terminal with a total quay length of 1,460m and cargo handling capacity of 3.1 million teu. It will be equipped with 15 super post panamax quay cranes, capable of handling 18,000 teu capacity container vessels.
Mundra is claimed to be the largest private commercial port in the country. Adani believes its deep draught and strategic location makes it an ideal choice for establishing a transshipment hub.
Meanwhile India’s current biggest container port, Jawahrul Nehru Port, handled a total of 4.48 million teu in the calendar year 2015. This broke the previous record for the port of 4. 47 million teu set in 2006, and was slightly higher than the 4.45 million teu achieved in 2014. The state-owned JN Port Container Terminal handled 1.37 million teu. This was the highest throughput achieved by the terminal since its inception, also breaking a 2006 record of 1.35 million teu.
