Two Dubai-head quartered companies, Transworld Group and Nawah, have entered into a formal agreement to service Iraq’s growing demand for imports by combining their significant shipping, logistics, marine services and port capabilities. Transworld and Nawah Port Management will team up with the aim of increasing the flow of goods coming from the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Far East and Southeast Asia into Iraq through the port of Basra, where Nawah has a strong presence.
“Iraq stands at such an important moment of time, historically and commercially, and we are keen to play a part in this phase of growth,” said Ritesh S. Ramakrishnan, Transworld Group’s director of strategy and business planning. The arrangement with Nawah is expected to enhance Transworld’s regional logistics capabilities and give it access to efficient port operations in Basra.
In recent weeks Transworld has started feeder services between Jebel Ali and Basra using the 2760 teu capacity OEL Dubai, with Nawah in return nominating Transworld as exclusive booking agents for cargo in the UAE. The Transworld group company, Balaji Shipping Lines, has recently also launched a regular break bulk and projects service between the UAE and Iraq, calling directly into the port of Basra, with the Amwaj Karoon 1.
Nawah operates a modern container terminal in Basra – also known as Al Maqal port – on the banks of the Shatt Al Arab waterway. Along with sister company Nawah Supply & Distribution, the company offers customers a wide spectrum of door-to-door, supply-chain capabilities for cargo being transshipped through Jebel Ali and bound for Iraq’s oil and gas fields and commercial markets.
“Together with Transworld Group’s four decades of shipping experience and Nawah’s in-depth knowledge and operational capabilities within Iraq, we are confident that we will redefine logistics in the Middle East,” said Nicholas Kunesh, Nawah Port Management’s president and CEO. “Through our combined expertise, market reach, state-of-the-art technology and customer-focused shipping and logistics services, we will enable Basra to continue its accelerated march to becoming a key strategic trading centre in the Middle East, bridging East and West.”
