Singapore-based Thoresen Shipping, a leading owner of dry bulk vessels, has opened a new Middle East office in Dubai. This will operate under the name Thoresen Shipping Arabia DMCC and represents the company’s fourth office outside of Singapore, following Denmark, South Africa and Thailand.
The company says the new Middle East-based team will enable Thoresen Shipping to provide customers in the region with an enhanced service by being in closer proximity. Customers will benefit from having better access to Thoresen Shipping’s commercially controlled, owned and technically managed fleet, which provides a high degree of operational flexibility, it is claimed.
The office will be led by Baard Osland, a dry bulk shipping industry veteran, who has already had experience setting up new offices for Thoresen, including those in Singapore and Copenhagen. Overall Thoresen Shipping’s commercial direction will continue to be provided by Mike Anderson, based in Singapore, however.
Mr Anderson says, “Dubai is a strategic location for facilitating trade into and out from the Persian Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and the Red Sea. This new office will improve the company’s fleet usage efficiency and revenue by creating a hub for backhaul tonnage moving from the Far East to South Africa, where they are positioned for shipments outbound into the Atlantic or back to the Far East.”
With a long heritage of offering shipping-related services since 1904, and active in the dry bulk sector since 1985, Thoresen is well-established in the global maritime community. Today, the company boasts a modern fleet of 24 owned Handymax and Supramax-sized vessels, including 14 geared and grab-fitted bulk carriers and 10 open hatch type vessels. Thoresen Shipping’s bulk carriers are deployed in a variety of trades, and operate on a mix of COA, period charters and sport charters, primarily in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.
