The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has experienced a strong surge in container traffic over the first quarter of 2021, according to recently released statistics. The country’s port network handled over 2.5 million TEU in these three months, over 16% up on the same period in 2020. According to Mawani this is the highest quarterly growth rate for container traffic recorded in the history of Saudi seaports.
Mawani points to a notable rise in transhipment activity, which now accounts for 41.36% of the total, with 1.3 million TEU being transhipped in Saudi ports. This is around 5 % higher compared to the first quarter of 2020.
The increase in container traffic has continued in April, when Saudi ports handled 609,000 TEU. This was an 8.25% upturn over the same month of the year before.
Overall, in the first quarter of 2021, Saudi ports handled 68 million tons of cargo, a slight increase of 0.82%. Mawani highlights increases in food products, vehicle imports and livestock.
