Omani ports handled nearly 2.5 million TEU of containers from January to June 2021, as well as 28.8 million tons of general cargo, representing an increase of 18% over the performance recorded in the first six months in 2020. In addition, liquid bulk handling grew by 12% to 9.9 million tons compared to the corresponding period of last year.
During the first six months of this year imported livestock witnessed a sharp upturn of 65%, to 1.9 million head, although the import of vehicles and equipment dropped by 8% to 55,500 units, national ports operator Asyad reports.
One of the Asyad network, the Port of Duqm, has recently launched a tender for a new container terminal with a target capacity of 1.7 million TEU a year. On offer is a 30 year licence to develop and operate the facility.
