Dubai-headquartered global terminal operator DP World Limited handled 46.5 million teu across its worldwide network of container terminals during the first nine months of 2015. This represents an increase of 3.2 per cent on a like-for-like basis, compared with the same period in 2014.
The company says the performance of its UAE terminals was a key factor in this increase, and they achieved a throughput of 11.9 million teu in this period, which is 4 per cent higher than in the equivalent period of 2014. Its terminals in the Indian subcontinent also delivered an improved performance as DP World benefitted from the recent capacity addition at Nhava Sheva.
New facilities in Yarimca, Turkey, and the second phase of terminal three at Jebel Al are due to come online in the near future. Additionally, DP World closed the acquisition of Fairview Terminal in Canada in August this year. As a result it is well placed to deliver further growth not just in the final quarter of 2015, but throughout 2016 as well.
DP World has also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Senegal to develop a logistics centre in the vicinity of the new Blaise Diagne International Airport, not far from DP World – Dakar Terminal. The new logistics free zone in Senegal, is expected to be one of the most advanced in Africa and complements DP World’s investments in DP World-Dakar Terminal, which is West Africa’s largest container terminal with a capacity of more than 600,000 teu a year.
