The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s ports authority, Mawani, has reported that container throughput at its nine ports increased by 9.27% over the first half of the year, exceeding 3.4 million teu. Overall Mawani handled 133 million tonnes of cargo, up 4.32% compared with the first six months of 2018, on 6102 vessels.
Livestock traffic has been one of the fastest growing elements in Saudi ports trade this year, with 4.1 million head moved over the first seven months of the year. It is reported that over 1.1 million head were handled in July alone, 97% more than in the equivalent month of 2018.
As part of its efforts to raise performance levels at its ports, Mawani has issued a unified work permit license to the shipping line Maersk, allowing it to operate in all nine ports. Maersk now joins Barwil, MSC and Hapag Lloyd as companies with a country-wide operating license.
