
The ports supervised by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) recorded a 9.11% increase in cargo throughput during July, reaching a total of 27.38 million tons, compared to 25,096,888 tons in the same month of 2023.
Container traffic statistics were mixed, however. Imported containers were up by 15.72%, to 271,465 TEU, while exported containers were down by 2.50% to 243,758 TEUs, compared with the corresponding period of 2023. The total number of containers handled by Saudi ports was 645,019 TEU, a decrease of 14.4% compared to last year. Transshipment containers slumped by 51.73%, to 129,797 TEU compared to 268,901 TEU in July 2023, largely because of the Red Sea situation.
More positively total general cargo reached 701,606 tons, solid bulk cargo recorded 4.48 million tons, and liquid bulk cargo was 15.35 million tons during July
There have been some encouraging developments for Dammam port in recent weeks. Milaha Gulf Express 2, operated by Qatar Navigation Company, has started calling here, connecting with ports in Qatar, Oman, China and India, including Ningbo, Shanghai and Shekou; Nhava Sheva and Mundra; Sohar and Hamad through bi-weekly regular sailings with vessels with a capacity of up to 9000 TEU. King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam also recently recorded the highest container throughput on a single vessel with 20,645 TEU moved on the vessel Cosco Shipping Aquarius.
