As part of a fresh wave of new privatisations, Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has awarded a series of multipurpose terminal facility concessions at ports on both the East and West Coasts of the Kingdom.
Saudi Global Ports (SGP) Group, through its subsidiary, Modern Port Services Company Limited, has been awarded four 20-year concession agreements by Mawani to operate multipurpose terminals along the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. These facilities are located at King Abdulaziz Port Dammam, Jubail Commercial Port, King Fahad Industrial Port Jubail and Ras Al-Khair Port
An established terminal operator in Saudi Arabia, SGP is currently the operator of container terminals in Dammam, as well as rail intermodal facilities in Riyadh. It also has an ongoing project to develop the Dammam Integrated Logistics Zone (DILZ), a strategic logistics hub. In 2024, SGP handled more than 4 million TEU across its network of ports and inland terminals.
Under the four new concession agreements, SGP plans to invest more than SR700 million (US$187 million) to upgrade the terminals and purchase new equipment. SGP also aims to integrate the four multipurpose terminals with its existing operations across Dammam and Riyadh, and to transform the terminals into “more efficient and resilient gateways.” SGP, with the support of its technical partner, PSA International, will also tailor training programmes for the existing and new workforce at all these terminals.
At the same time, it has been confirmed that Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) will develop, manage, and operate multipurpose cargo terminals at ports on the western coast, including Jeddah Islamic Port, Yanbu Commercial Port, King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu and Jazan Port.
RSGT, which is setting up a new Multi Purpose Terminals Business Unit to undertake this work, will invest a total of US$ 418 million over the course of the 20-year concession period, in upgrading infrastructure and equipment and introduce smart technology. It is planned to invest around US$ 180 million within the first 5 years alone. The contracts for the King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu include investments to increase container handling capacity, through new STS and RTG cranes, and reach stackers, trucks and trailers.
