Jeddah-based Star Marine has taken delivery of four new tugs, Murjan 1, 2, 3, and 4, to strengthen its towage capabilities in the Saudi Arabian port of Rabigh. All four vessels are RAstar 3400 escort tugs, designed by Robert Allan Limited (RAL) of Canada, and were built at the Triyards SSY facility in Saigon, Vietnam.
The RAstar 3400 escort/offshore terminal tug designation is reserved for a distinctive class of very high-performance ASD tugs, designed with a unique sponsoned hull-form. According to RAL, this provides significantly enhanced escort towing and seakeeping performance, as escort forces are enhanced by the effects of the sponsons. During recent trials the vessels exceeded performance expectations, achieving a bollard pull ahead of 73.8 tonnes and a free running speed of over 14 knots.
Star Marine Services (SMS) is a joint venture between Almajdouie Holding and Marine Services Co. The company is responsible for the provision and operation of tug boats, pilot boats and mooring boat, as well as towage, pilotage, mooring and vessel traffic control services, in the ports of Jeddah and Rabigh, under a 15 year contract awarded by Saudi Aramco in 2008. SMS is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of anti-pollution equipment in these ports.
