Dubai-based Sallaum Lines DMCC has contracted technology group Wärtsilä to supply a range of solutions aimed at minimising the carbon footprint of six new Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels being built for them in China. Wärtsilä, through its joint venture company, Wärtsilä Qiyao Diesel Company has been contracted to deliver three Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary gen-sets, operating mainly on LNG fuel, for each of the six vessels. Wärtsilä has also been contracted to deliver the transverse thrusters and the main engine control system for these vessels.
Additionally for four of the vessels, Wärtsilä will supply shaft generator systems, which will reduce the auxiliary gen-sets’ running hours while at sea, thereby further reducing the ships’ emissions and lowering operating costs.
“We are committed to sustainability and to reducing our environmental impact through implementing eco-friendly practices and reducing emissions and are moving forward to a sustainable future by working to achieve zero emissions by 2050,” says Puneet Arora, Technical Manager, Sallaum Lines.
The six car carrier vessels are being built at Chinese shipyards, four at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard and two at Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co.
Sallaum Lines’s so-called Ocean Class series will each have capacity for 7500 car units, larger than most conventional Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC). With a length of over 200m, the vessel type also has a higher ramp and deck capacity, expanding the range of cargo that can be lifted on its 14 vehicle decks.
The dual-fuel LNG design, developed in collaboration with the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), enables the Ocean Class vessels to utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG), marine gas oil (MGO) and very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO).
