Abu Dhabi Ports’ marine services division, Safeen, has acquired a post-Panamax bulk carrier, which will be the biggest vessel in its fleet. The investment in the secondhand tonnage will enable Safeen to offer dry bulk transshipment services within the UAE.
Originally built in Romania in 2006, the vessel will operate under the name Hafeet and will initially undergo an extensive conversion, including refitting with four new cranes and a conveyor system. In addition the vessel will receive new hoppers, grabs and additional generators to support its increased power requirements during its refit at an as yet undisclosed shipyard.
Once the conversion is completed, in the latter part of 2020, Hafeet will be based at Musaffah and will be tasked with supporting Emirates Steel’s transhipment requirements. Due to start, cargo operations in January next year, the vessel will help discharge bulk iron ore bound for Emirates Steel from incoming bulk carriers more efficiently, reducing the turnaround times for large ocean going vessels and cutting costs.
