Safeen, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports, has announced that it collected over 120 tons of floating sea debris in Abu Dhabi waters last year, recycling more than 10 tons of the collected material.
Safeen’s Environment and Anti-Pollution Department, which was established in 2015, is run by Emirati staff trained to international standards. The division has designed a special boat which was responsible for the collection of floating debris, such as plastic, wood, ropes and fishing nets.
In addition, the department coordinates joint actions with various parties involved in protecting the environment and marine life, particularly coral and sea turtles. It also organises awareness campaigns about the hazards of throwing waste in the sea.
Safeen furthermore now has the resources and tools needed for treating and containing Level One oil spills, according to criteria set by the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA). The company cooperates with other local and international companies and organisations to develop strategies to contain any oil spills in Abu Dhabi waters.
