The founder of the Foresight Group, Ravi K Mehotra, has launched a specialist Institute for the study of business, markets and society at the Questrom School of Business at the University of Boston, USA. The mission of the Institute is to help students, industry leaders, regulators and the broader public “understand and appreciate the role business and markets do, can and should play in creating lasting prosperity, advancing societal goals, and solving global challenges.” The Institute’s initial research pursuits will prioritise current issues within the world of business, but the Institute will also have a focus on non-research efforts designed to spark conversations and increase public knowledge about the role and responsibility of business in a modern, global society.
Ravi K. Mehrotra has been a key figure within the international maritime industry for many years. A marine engineer by profession, he began his career in 1964 with the Shipping Corporation of India, before rising to the rank of Chief Engineer. Thereafter he was seconded as Managing Director for the company’s international joint ventures. It was through these experiences that he earned the international connections that enabled him to realise his ambitions of starting his own shipping company, the Foresight Group, in 1984. This year Foresight celebrates its 40th anniversary and to mark the occasion Dr Mehotra made his landmark gift to set up the Ravi K. Mehotrta Institute in Boston.
As an entrepreneur and philanthropic by nature, he has created a business empire diversified into oil drilling, energy shipping, port infrastructure in India, a branded retail business and shoe component manufacturing in India, and a maritime training not for profit institute.
