PSA’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (PSA Mumbai) and Gateway Rail Freight Limited (GRFL) have introduced a block train service between Mumbai and GRFL’s Inland Container Depot (ICD) network in North India, including sites at Gabri-Harvard, Ludhiana, Piyala and Viramgam.
The third quarter of 2019 witnessed a significant increase in the proportion of rail containers handled both by PSA Mumbai and at JNPT overall. This new service is intended to provide carriers and cargo owners with faster and more reliable inland transit times, by synchronising vessel and train arrivals and departures. PSA points out that all JNPT terminals can connect with Gateway’s new service, thanks to the smoother inter-terminal rail container connections now in place, following an agreement signed last year.
The new service is a fixed day service, giving greater certainty to customers, and is also operated on a common user basis. That opens access to various carriers, including those bringing in smaller quantities, PSA Mumbai points out
