For Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) 2017 was a highly successful year, during which time the classification society increased the size of its class fleet, achieved growing global recognition, improved its geographical presence and strengthened its capabilities through several new initiatives.
According to IRClass, its fleet grew by 5.3% in numbers and 4.8% in tonnage terms over the past year. At the end of 2017, IRS held 1754 vessels, totalling 12.7 million gross tonnes, under class.
Over the past year the society has expanded its geographic presence adding Turkey, Malta, Rotterdam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh to its network, to service the needs of its customers and provide them with quicker access to services. Further expansion is planned during 2018, it adds.
IRClass is currently recognised by 39 flag states globally, which together represent approximately 55% of the world’s tonnage. Key flag states, including the US Coast Guard and Malta, were added to the list of those granting recognition during 2017, while IRClass also received two key authorisations from the European Union. These involved accreditation for EU MRV (Monitoring Reporting and Verification) services by RvA and authorisation from the European Union Maritime Equipment Directive (EU MarED).
According to the society, digitalisation, Big Data, cyber security, LNG-fueled vessels, and Vessel Performance Management will be amongst the key areas of interest in 2018. “The focus of IRClass will continue to be on enhancing its classed fleet, increasing its global footprint, gaining more flag recognitions and further strengthening its image as ‘Class by Choice’”, observed IRClass managing director, Suresh Sinha.
IRClass is an independent ship classification society providing ship classification and certification as well as technical inspection services. IRClass is also a Member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
