The Oman Shipping Company (OSC) has signed a deal to acquire two Ultramax 64,000dwt class vessels as part of an ongoing investment programme to build up its bulk carrier capacity to meet market requirements, and in particular the needs of Oman’s mining industry. The 2015-built SBI Taurus and 2014-built TR Omaha, are due for delivery in April and May this year respectively and will be renamed Jamal Samhan and Jamal Al Kawr.
A statement from OSC said: “From our perspective this is an opportune time to acquire assets, given current market conditions, and we are pleased with the outcome of our negotiations. We will explore opportunities for further acquisitions during the course of 2020.”
When the additional ships are handed over, OSC will have a fleet of some 55 vessels of varying types, including six Ultramax type bulkers. The company has also announced tanker fleet growth plans, ordering three VLCCs with South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Two of these tankers are due for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2020 and one in 2021.
