Dutch shipyard Royal IHC has launched the new trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), Ghasha, for Abu Dhabi’s National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC). The design of the new vessel is based on that of the 6,000m3 Ariana, which was also delivered to NMDC by IHC in 2018. However, it features a number of notable differences, including an enlarged hopper capacity of 8,000m3 and a larger dredging depth of 45m.
According to IHC, “The technologically advanced design of Ghasha is the result of close cooperation with NMDC. This has led to a tailor-made solution that combines a shallow draft and a large dredging depth, with a high level of maneuverability and suitability for operating in challenging environments with high temperatures.”
In addition, IHC is to deliver the first TSHD simulator to the Middle East. This will allow NMDC to further develop and strengthen its in-house dredging capabilities.
