An official inauguration ceremony was recently held at Sohar Port and Freezone to mark the delivery of two new pilot boats. These will be operated in the port by the Maersk group subsidiary, Svitzer.
Commenting on the arrival of the vessels, Mark Geilenkirchen, chief executive of Sohar Port, said, “Following our agreement with Svitzer in September last year to upgrade our pilot vessel fleet, we are proud to see these vessels set sail. Their delivery will reinforce our commitment to provide safe and efficient pilot services, which are a vital link in our operational capability and port competitiveness.”
Svitzer Oman as well as providing the pilot boats, will also be responsible for their maintenance and manning. Availability will be maintained 24 hours around the clock to ensure a safe and efficient means of transport for marine pilots.
Her Highness Sayyida Al Said, chairman of the Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children, and Esther Groenewegen, the wife of Mark Geilenkirchen, christened the two boats – Svitzer Majan and Svitzer Al Bateel – which were both built by Besiktas Shipyard in Turkey. Each was built to a Camarc Design, are equipped with two Caterpillar engines and are capable of carrying 12 people.
Sohar Freezone also recently conducted a groundbreaking ceremony today to mark the first phase of the RFX Parks project. This service will allow tenants to lease warehouse or light industrial units instead of building their own and is expected to attract potential investors.
