The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has started a new ro-ro operation in collaboration with the Government of Assam, to improve connections with Majuli Island. The idea is to reduce the time required for road haulage transport which at present has to use a 400km road route, via the Tezpur Road Bridge. By contrast the use of the river route by ro-ro ships requires a distance of less than 13km.
IWAI has procured a new vessel, Bhupen Hazarika, for the new service and is providing the terminal infrastructure as well. The 46.5m long vessel has a carrying capacity of eight trucks and 100 passengers. IWAI says it is now planning to acquire more such ro-ro vessels for use on the Brahmaputra River.
