The General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone has announced that the first green bunkering operation with methanol has taken place in East Port Said port after the berthing of a Maersk container ship. The supply service took nearly 6 hours to complete. This operation is said to be the first of its kind in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East, and is considered a key part of Egypt’s strategy to strengthen its role in ships’ bunkering services.
The vessel involved, which has been retrofitted to run on methanol, is believed to be the first container ship in the world that operates with this green fuel. The vessel was supplied from the barge Lara S, and the operation was undertaken in cooperation with OCI Global. During its stay the container ship was supplied with 500 tons of green methanol at the Suez Canal Container Terminal.
