Mawani and SGP formalise Jubail terminal concession
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has finalised a concession agreement with Saudi Global Ports (SGP) covering the development, operation, and management of the container terminal at Jubail Commercial Port, a project which is expected to generate around SAR2 billion ($528 million) of private sector investment.
Under the terms of the arrangement, SGP is committed to upgrade the terminal, which will include lengthening the quay to around 1400m and deepening the water depth alongside to 18m. The operator will also bring in more ship-to-shore cranes and rubber-tyred gantry cranes as part of an investment package that will boost annual container throughput capacity to around 2.4 million TEU, while also enabling it to handle larger container ships.
This is not the only public-private investment programme signed by Mawani in recent weeks. It has also signed a contract with Q Saudi to develop an Integrated Truck Services Centre at King Abdulaziz Port with investments amounting to SAR180 million ($48 million); an agreement with Kuwait‘s Agility to develop an integrated logistics park at King Abdulaziz Port on a site spanning 400,000m2; and has inaugurated the AlDrees Logistics Centre and eXtra Logistics Centre at King Abdulaziz Port, with a combined investment value of around SAR70 million (US$18.7 million).
