The appointment of board members of the Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (EMAC), the first of its kind in the Middle East, is an important milestone for the UAE maritime community.
The decree ordering the appointments was issued by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It stipulates the formation of the Board of Trustees for EMAC and designates well-known arbitrator, Sir Anthony Colman, as chairman and Majid Obaid bin Bashir as vice chairman. The board also includes a high level group of government, maritime, legal and business figures, including Ahmad Essa Al Falahi, Dr. Ali Obaid Al Yabhouni, Dr. Chi-Sang Kim, Mohammed Al Muallem, Capt. Mohamed Juma Al Shamsi, Mohammed Saeed Al Kindi, Saadi Abdul Rahim Al Rais, Saeed Al Malek, Capt. Jitendra Misra, Richard Briggs, Edward Newitt, Christopher Mills and Essam Bella.
Welcoming the start of the EMAC service, H.E. Sultan Bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and President of Dubai Maritime City Authority, describes it as a development that was of ‘special importance’ as an initiative for the settlement of disputes according to arbitration mechanisms and independent legal frameworks and regulatory controls. He said it was a key part of an overall strategy that aims to place the UAE at the forefront of the world’s maritime capitals by the year 2020.
EMAC aims to provide an integrated framework for settling disputes arising from marine business transactions. It promises to make a valuable contribution by boosting the confidence of investors and regional and international ship owners in local maritime systems.
