In recent weeks, the Omani port of Duqm has received its first Maersk container shipment. The debut container, carrying cargo destined for a major project under development in the Duqm area, was carried on a service from APM Terminals’ container terminal in Nhava Sheva’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), India, via Jebel Ali, where it was picked up by Oman Shipping’s express feeder service and delivered to Duqm.
The shipment is considered important as it adds another container line to the growing list of those now offering a service to Duqm. The expansion in container shipping customers has been facilitated by Oman Shipping’s feeder service, which connects Salalah, Sohar and Jebel Ali with Duqm. The service enables containers bound for Duqm to be picked up and transhipped on a weekly basis.
The volume of container traffic moving through Duqm is expected to pick up steadily over the next year. Towards the end of 2020 Duqm expects to open up a dedicated container terminal that will enable direct calls to commence, reducing reliance on transhipment operations.
