Krishnapatnam port’s Navayuga Container Terminal (NCT) reached an important milestone on 27th March, when it handled 500,000 teu for the first time in a financial year in 2018/19. The landmark container was loaded on the SSL Kutch.
The container terminal has witnessed rapid growth since opening in 2013, handling just over 58,000 teu in its first full year of operation. Anil Yendluri, chief executive of Krishnapatnam Port, said, “NCT has taken giant strides in getting established as a transshipment hub on the East Coast of India and we are working towards making it the main hub port in the Bay of Bengal.”
Further investment is currently underway to expand terminal capacity from 1.2 million teu to 2 million teu annually by the end of 2019, to keep ahead of demand. This follows on from the recent delivery of five new e-RTGs, an increase in yard capacity to 5000 slots and an increase in the number of reefer container points to service 200 additional units.
