Abu Dhabi Ports (ADP) has signed an agreement with Chinese interests that is expected to bring AED 1.1 billion of investment into Khalifa Port Free Trade Zone (KPFTZ).
An investment deal between ADP and China’s Jiangsu Province was signed in late July, by H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State, and Madame Huang Lixin, Executive Vice Governor of Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, in addition to officials from both sides. Alongside this strategic agreement, the ceremony also marked the establishment of a 50-year Musataha Agreement between Abu Dhabi Ports and the Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Cooperation and Investment Company Limited (JOCIC), relating to the Khalifa Port Free Trade Zone (KPFTZ). Under the terms of this agreement, China-UAE Industrial Capacity Cooperation (Jiangsu) Construction Management, a UAE company newly established by JOCIC, will occupy and develop approximately 23.7 million ft2 of the free trade zone which will be set aside for companies from the Chinese province of Jiangsu. This represents 2.2% of the available free zone space in KIZAD’s recently created KPFTZ area.
Representatives from five Chinese companies have already announced plans to become tenants and invest in the area that has been leased. These include Hanergy Thin Film Power Group, Jiangsu Fantai Mining Development, Xuzhou Jianghe Wood, Jiangsu Jinzi Environmental Technology and Guangzheng Group. The five companies will inject over a billion dirhams into KPFTZ, creating over 1,400 jobs, it has been claimed.
China is now the UAE’s second largest trading partner and the biggest exporter to the UAE. The UAE is considered a gateway to about 60% of China’s exports to regional markets.
Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi said: “The Musataha agreement between Abu Dhabi Ports and JOCIC is one of the largest lease agreements for KIZAD to date. This investment will drive trade relations with Jiangsu and accelerate investment in industrial assets in Abu Dhabi.”
Last year, Abu Dhabi Ports signed a deal with China’s COSCO Shipping Limited, the world’s largest container operator, which has chosen Khalifa Port as the hub for its operations in the Middle East. The agreement is expected to raise the annual capacity of Khalifa Port to 6 million teu.
