Electronic documentation now covers around 99% per cent of trade being handled by shipping lines at Jawarhal Nehru port in India, the port authority claims. Some 30 lines, out of 31 calling regularly at the port, have implemented e-delivery of orders (e-DO) replacing the manual handing over of delivery orders.
The initiative has speeded up the process and avoided lengthy queuing. The port authority says the progress made with the e-DO system will not only reduce waiting times for consignees and agents, but will reduce congestion and pollution at JN Port by reducing the amount of vehicle traffic on port roads.
Among other measures taken to reduce congestion and pollution in and around JN Port, JNPT has granted a waiver for container handling charges to container freight stations with rail sidings, encouraging rail movement.
