The number of containers handled by under Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT)’s Direct Port Delivery (DPD) services jumped by more than 34% this October compared with the same month of last year. The Indian Government is promoting the DPD concept at container terminals as a major step towards reducing transaction costs at ports. JNPT has eased up the procedures for EXIM trade to clear more containers under DPD.
Another JNPT initiative, the Inter-Terminal Transfer (ITT) of tractor trailers, is also reported to have helped in reducing the traffic on port roads by up to 10% and optimising utilisation of transport resources. Under the ITT facility, a total of 13,365 trucks completed 17,260 transactions in October 2016.
The container throughput at JNPT overall is still seeing strong growth. This October the port handled 368,000 teu, of which JNPCT – the port-owned container terminal – handled 129,000 teu, a rise of 10.58% compared with October 2015.
