JNPA starts long-haul double-stack train operations
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port, has achieved a significant milestone in terms of its Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) operaIons, with the departure of the first long-haul double stack block train service.
The double stack rail wagon set, operated by Concor, departed from JNPA on August 21st this year, bound for GCT-Varnama (CGMV) carrying 360 TEU of import cargo that arrived through the BMCTPL container terminal operated by PSA. The movement marks a significant advance in JNPA’s long-haul rail connectivity and strengthens its capability to facilitate faster and more efficient movement of export and import cargoes to and from the port.
The start of long-haul double-stack operations will enable the movement of higher volumes of cargo in single container train sets, enhancing the efficiency and capacity of rail-based freight transportation. Importantly, this improved connectivity is expected to facilitate faster evacuation of import containers from the port, reduce import dwell time and enable cargo to reach its destination with shorter transit times. The provision of an efficient rail alternative to road for the movement of export and import cargoes over long distances is expected to help reduce existing port bottlenecks.
With ongoing investment in infrastructure and intermodal connectivity, JNPA says it is strengthening its position as a key gateway for India’s international trade. According to a statement, “The commencement of the first long-haul double stack DFC train represents another important step towards building a faster, more efficient, reliable and competitive multimodal logistics network for the country.”
