IRS Advances Indian Shipbuilding with New Coast Guard Vessels
The classification society Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is strengthening its role in advancing Indian shipbuilding capabilities, working closely with the Indian Coast Guard and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on the construction of two new Indian Coast Guard vessels — the Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) ICGS Samudra Prachet and the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Atal — both recently launched at the shipyard.
ICGS Samudra Prachet, the second in a series of two PCVs built by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard, will play a key role in tackling marine pollution incidents, particularly oil spills, within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). ICGS Atal, the sixth in a series of eight FPVs designed in-house by GSL and classed by IRS, will support multi-role Coast Guard operations, including coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, island protection and search and rescue missions.
In another significant milestone for India’s shipbuilding industry, IRS, as the primary classification society, oversaw the keel laying of the first of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) for the Indian Coast Guard at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. These NGOPVs are designed for maritime surveillance, pollution response, search and rescue, and anti-smuggling operations, reinforcing India’s maritime security infrastructure.
Cdr KK Dhawan, Head Defence at IRS, said: “Indian Register of Shipping remains deeply committed to supporting the Indian Government’s vision of maritime self-reliance by partnering in the design, development, and classification of a wide range of defence and specialised vessels. These developments further reinforce IRS’s standing as a trusted technical partner in India’s shipbuilding resurgence.”
