Indian classification society, IRClass, has classed its first vessel under the Lebanese flag. The 9950gt Jouri was converted from a vehicle carrier to a livestock transporter under the survey of IRClass, in a project which included structural modifications, plan approval and the re-approval of stability conditions.
According to IRClass, the modification process was complicated and was carried out under the close supervision of its surveyors to the satisfaction of owner, Etab Shipping and its technical manager, Safe Sea Service of Beirut.
“The project took around four months to complete, and we had to overcome various technical challenges such as the location of permanent ballast and the arrangements for storing cattle feed to take into account the stability of the vessel,” comments Rajeev Pratap Rao, IRClass’ Regional Manager for Middle East and Africa.
Based on the success of this project IRClass says it is now working on a similar conversion involving another car carrier, City of Barcelona.
