Around 90 participants from the Middle East maritime fraternity recently attended an IMarEST UAE branch technical meeting, hosted in conjunction with DNV GL in Dubai. Nikeel Idnani, Honorary Secretary of the IMarEST UAE branch, welcomed the audience and introduced the speakers, including Johan Tutturen, vice president, Gas Carriers, at DNV GL, who introduced ‘LNGreen’ a state-of-the-art next-generation LNG carrier.
A joint industry project had brought together experts from DNV GL, GTT, Hyundai Heavy Industries and GasLog. Mr. Tutturen said the vessel concept developed by these partners has a significantly improved environmental footprint, a higher level of energy efficiency, as well as an improved boil-off rate and cargo capacity, making it much better suited to future trading patterns than existing vessels.
Nikolaos Kakalis, manager of R&D at DNV GL, explained that these developments were based on the classification society’s integrated systems engineering approach, advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations and a containment system design tailored to a specific operational profile and anticipated trades. As a result of using advanced computer tools, the vessel is 8% more energy efficient and has increased cargo capacity by 5%, he claimed.
The audience also heard from Gerhard Aulbert, DNV GL’s global head of Ship Recycling and Geir Fuglerud, DNV GL’s Maritime Area Manager, Middle East. DNV GL hosted a cocktail dinner at the Address Dubai Marina, after the discussions.
