HPH deploys autonomous truck technology in Hong Kong
Container handling equipment automation is high on the agenda for regional terminal operators right now, and there will doubtless be great interest in a significant development in HongKong where Hutchison Port Holdings Trust (HPH Trust) has recently launched its inaugural Autonomous Truck (AT) fleet. The company, one of the world’s leading global terminal operators, has deployed Westwell’s autonomous Q-Truck, a zero-emission, AI-powered vehicle, to enhance container terminal efficiency
Q-Truck, designed without a driver’s cab, operates alongside conventional vehicles in the terminal. Powered by AI-driven algorithms, binocular cameras, advanced sensors and precise positioning systems, Q-Truck is configured to deliver round-the-clock all-weather performance and also has built-in obstacle detection and emergency response systems.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Liu Chun San, Under Secretary for Transport and Logistics, HKSAR Government, said, “The launch of autonomous trucks not only marks a key milestone for the development of Hong Kong’s container terminals, but also signifies a pivotal step in the smart transition of Hong Kong’s port industry. This innovative initiative is a proactive response to the Government’s vision for promoting green and smart shipping, setting a good example for promoting the sustainable development and technological advancement of the Hong Kong Port.”
Currently, Q-Trucks are in operation at HPH Terminal 4. HPH Trust plans to expand its AT fleet further, including the introduction of e-trucks, e-reach stackers and associated battery swapping stations.
