Qatar’s Hamad Port has become the first 5G-enabled seaport in the Middle East, with support from telecommunications provider, Ooredoo. The 5G roll-out for Phase 1 at Hamad Port Container Terminal 2 is now complete, enabling port users to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities of 5G in remote crane and rubber-tyred gantry operations, among other areas of the terminal that will benefit from ultra-fast data speeds, low latency and real-time data communications.
The project began in June 2020 in partnership with the terminal’s operator, QTerminals. Today the 5G network at Container Terminal 2 covers an area of more than 571,000m2.
QTerminals is a terminal operating company jointly established by Mwani Qatar and Milaha. Ooredoo’s rollout of further phases of 5G deployment at QTerminals’ facilities is now underway.
