
Sharjah-headquartered Gulftainer achieved an impressive 8 per cent growth in container volume in 2014, achieving a total of 6.4 million teu worldwide.
Gulftainer’s Saudi terminals performed well, with the Northern Container Terminal accounting for 1.9 million teu, while Jubail Container Terminal (JCT) recorded a growth rate of 22 per cent to handle over 396,000 teu. In Iraq, Gulftainer’s Umm Qasr terminal accomplished throughput growth of 46 per cent in 2014, and the relatively new Recife terminal in Brazil handled 7 per cent more than in 2013.
Gulftainer’s UAE terminals remained the core of the group’s business, with total volume rising to 3.8 million teu. The Sharjah Container Terminal (SCT) handled over 400,000 teu for the first time, boosted by the arrival of new services, such as UASC’s Gulf India Service (GIS1), which now connects Sharjah with Sohar in Oman, Mundra in India and Karachi in Pakistan. Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) confirmed its position as one of the region’s main hubs, with throughput of around 3.3 million teu. KCT has recently received and commissioned new ship-to-shore and rubber tyred gantry cranes following investment of more US$60 million by Gulftainer.
Gulftainer operates and manages ports and logistics businesses in the UAE, Iraq, Pakistan, Brazil, Lebanon, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Last year company signed a 35-year concession with the Canaveral Port Authority in Florida marking Gulftainer’s first venture in the United States.
