Unifeeder and Sagarmala Finance Partner to Boost Green Coastal Shipping
Unifeeder, part of the DP World group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India’s Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited (SMFCL), a Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, to collaborate on developing and scaling up commercially sustainable coastal and shortsea shipping services across India. By aligning public sector financing with private sector operational expertise, the partnership aims to drive greener, more efficient coastal logistics and accelerate India’s maritime transformation.
The MoU has established a framework for joint action to design and finance coastal shipping corridors that support India’s ambitions to decongest roads, lower logistics costs and decarbonise transportation. SMFCL will use its Maritime Development Fund to deliver low-cost financing and credit-enhancement instruments, while Unifeeder will contribute its operational expertise, multimodal infrastructure and digital capabilities.
The agreement is part of an additional US$ 5 billion that DP World has recently committed to invest in India over the coming years. Along with the deal between Unifeeder and Sagarmala Finance, DP World company Drydocks World has agreed a Heads of Terms with Cochin Shipyard aimed at expanding and operating the International Ship Repair Facility in Kochi, while Drydocks World and Cochin Shipyard are working together with the Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS) to jointly advance skills development in shipbuilding and repair. DP World and Cochin Port Authority are coming together to upgrade facilities at DP World’s International Container Transshipment Terminal in Kochi, and there has been an agreement between Deendayal Port Authority, DP World and Nevomo (MagRail) to enable the design and installation of a 750m MagRail booster pilot in the port, setting the stage for the next generation of automated, low-emission port operations in India.
