Qatar Petroleum, now renamed Qatar Energy, has ordered four new LNG carriers from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, as the first stage of a massive LNG shipbuilding program to cater for the shipping requirements of the North Field expansion project, as well as to replace some existing vessels. This order is the first ever placed by Qatar for LNG ships with a Chinese shipyard.
His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of Qatar Energy, commented, “We are confident in Hudong’s capabilities to execute this order, worth in excess of QR 2.8 billion, to the highest safety and technical standards and to deliver top quality LNG carriers that will facilitate continued safe and reliable delivery of LNG to the world.”
The North Field expansion will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tons to 126 million tons per annum. Qatar Energy’s LNG carrier fleet program, which will see over 100 new ships built, is the largest of its kind in the history of the LNG industry.
