An important milestone in the development of the new Cosco Shipping Abu Dhabi Terminal was reached recently with the delivery of the first batch of automated rail mounted gantry (ARMG) and ship-to-shore (STS) quayside cranes to Khalifa Port.
The consignment included ten ARMG cranes and four STS units, which were transported on a heavy lift ship from Shanghai. The handling equipment features advanced technology designed to enhance productivity and safety, and will be fully integrated with Khalifa Port’s terminal operating system.
Capt. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, chief executive of Abu Dhabi Ports, said, “We are extremely happy with the progress of the Cosco Shipping Abu Dhabi Terminal, which is poised to start operations by end of this year. The terminal will allow us to serve a larger number of customers regionally and globally, and bring greater opportunities for business growth for the company.”
In September 2016, Abu Dhabi Ports signed a 35-year concession agreement with Cosco Shipping Ports, comprising an area of around 70 hectares within Khalifa Port. Work is well advanced on an initial 800m of quay and back up yard space which will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2019. A further 400m of quay is expected to be operational in 2020, giving the terminal three berths with 18m draft alongside and an annual capacity of around 2400 teu. Cosco Shipping Ports has an option to develop a further 600m of quay in the future.
