Fincantieri and Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB) have announced that they have reached an agreement in principle to explore options for future cooperation in the UAE shipbuilding sector.
The agreement, to be detailed in the near future with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is a key part of Fincantieri’s development strategy in the Middle East, where it aims to promote the development of local activities, both in terms of shipbuilding as well as shiprepair and after sales services activities, in the region. Fincantieri and ADSB will establish a working group to define and prepare a common set of proposals, maximising local content where possible, for a number of future programs. These will involve the UAE Navy, as well as the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA) and will provide both for the construction of new vessels and refitting and maintenance activities.
In the last decade, Fincantieri has built a particularly close relationship with the United Arab Emirates Navy. The Italian yard has delivered three new vessels now operating with the Navy and has established a local joint venture, Etihad Ship Building, to support the maintenance and the operational capability of these vessels.
