Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed a contract for the construction of two autonomous electric ferries for Asko Maritime of Norway with an option to build to more identical vessels. The 67m vessels will be managed by Massterly, a joint venture between Kongsberg and Wilhelmsen, and will be capable of transporting 16 standard road trailers across Norwegian fjords. Each will be powered by a 1846 kWh capacity battery and will have zero carbon emissions.
CSL won this export order against tough international competition based on its track record, including the fact it is already constructing 23 hybrid electric boats for the Kochi Water Metro. The yard says it believes that the order will catapult it into the ‘premier league’ of yards worldwide capable of handling such high-tech vessel construction.
