Essar Vizag Terminal Limited, which operates India’s largest iron ore handling complex in Vishakhapatnam Port, handled around 1.3 million tonnes of cargo in April 2022. This would suggest a 14 million tonnes throughput for the 2022-3 financial year, a growth rate of around 10% on an annualised basis, up from the 12.7 million tonnes achieved in the 2021-2 financial year.
The surge in traffic is said to reflect an upturn in the Indian steel sector which has been a major contributor to a rise in India’s manufacturing output.
The terminal also reached another milestone in April this year, when it loaded a record 165,000 tonnes of iron ore fines on the bulk carrier Star Elini. This was the largest ever bulk cargo parcel handled at Visakhapatnam Port
Rajiv Agarwal, Managing Director, Essar Ports, said, “The performance of Vizag Terminal is testimony to our commitment to offer world class assets and services with technology at the core. Our facilities are conceptualised to give a sustainable advantage to our customers and trade and our investments are a reflection of Essar’s philosophy and approach that places people before profits.”
With an annual capacity of 24 million tonnes, EVTL is strategically located in the Bay of Bengal in close proximity to iron ore mines located in Chhattisgarh, southern Odisha and Jharkhand.
