Demonstrating its commitment to knowledge sharing within the region’s legal and maritime sectors, the Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (EMAC) recently held a session on bill of lading disputes at its offices in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Held as part of the ‘Breakfast with EMAC’ series, the session was conducted by guest speaker Richard Strub, Partner at HFW.
“Bills of lading are important documents for the maritime sector. They not only work as a receipt of freight services, they are also a document of title and a contract between the freight carrier and shipper,” observed Majid Obaid bin Bashir, Acting Chairman and Secretary General, EMAC. “Understandably, disputes around bills of lading can have significant and far reaching consequences for affected parties. As a result, it is important for those working in the sector to understand the options available to help resolve these disputes, such as using arbitration measures through EMAC.”
The bill of lading seminar is the fifth in a series of sessions which aim to expand the knowledge of the region’s arbitrators and increase the legal sector’s pool of experts. Each session has been accredited independently for one credit by the Dubai Government Legal Affairs Department’s Continuing Legal Professional Development.
As EMAC continues its awareness campaign, the Centre has several events in the pipeline for the remainder of 2017. Industry professionals wishing to find out more should email info@emac.org.ae
