DP World boosts Jeddah capacity with new quay cranes
DP World has added three new semi-automated quay cranes at its terminal in Jeddah Islamic Port, increasing capacity a time when shipping activity is returning to the Red Sea. With a lifting capacity of 65 tonnes each, the new cranes will enable the terminal to serve up to five mainline vessels simultaneously.
Built by ZPMC and currently at the commissioning stage, the arrival of the new cranes takes the total number of ship-to-shore units at the DP World Jeddah South Container Terminal from 14 to 17. The company says it plans to acquire five more ship-to-shore cranes, taking the number to 22, as part of future capacity upgrades.
The new cranes are part of an ongoing US $800 million modernisation programme that will boost terminal capacity from 1.8 million TEU to 4 million TEU a year. Future plans envision an eventual throughput capacity of 5 million TEU, DP World points out.
Mohammad Alshaikh, CEO, DP World KSA, commented: “By expanding capacity and enhancing operational agility, we are helping our customers move goods more efficiently and strengthening the terminal’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and growing container volumes. While recent regional developments have brought new challenges, we are working closely with port authorities, security partners and shipping customers to ensure safe, reliable operations to keep trade moving across the Red Sea and beyond.”
In 2025, DP World Jeddah handled over 1.3 million TEU. This was more than double the volumes of the previous year as shipping lines returned to the Red Sea corridor and the number of container services increased to 38 weekly calls.
