
Container throughput at Saudi Arabian ports during April grew at an annual rate of 13.34%, rising from 601,429 TEU in April 2022 to 681,663 TEU this year, according to monthly statistics released by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani).
Container data for last month showed a 17% surge in exported container volumes, at 208,738 TEU compared to 178,450 TEU in the same month of the previous year. Imports, on the other hand, edged up only 3.1% to 208,080 TEU from 201,784 TEU this year. Transhipment activity saw the biggest increase, however, jumping by close to 20% to 264,845 TEU from 221,195 TEU in April 2022.
Mawani revealed a 6.63% drop in total cargo volume at its ports, handling about 24.96 million tons, down from 26,74 million tons a year earlier. Included in the total cargo count for April was 543,496 tons of general cargo, 4.14 million tons of dry bulk, and 13.02 million tons of liquid bulk cargo.
There was also a decrease in food commodity shipments, although livestock figures rose 2.63% from 446,539 to 458,280 head of cattle.
Automobile units passing through Mawani’s ports in April 2023 however witnessed a sizeable jump of 52.8% from their 2022 level, bettered only by passenger traffic, which recorded an impressive 122.64% leap from 38,706 to 86,175 passengers. The Kingdom’s ports also accommodated 983 vessels last month, a steady increase of 3.69% from April 2022’s total of 948 vessels.
