Qatar’s prime minister and interior minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani attended a ceremony to welcome the first commercial vessel at the new Hamad Port. The heavy lift vessel, Zhen Hua 10, was transporting the first batch of container cranes for Qatar’s New Port Project. The cranes, which can handle the world’s largest container vessels, are destined for the port’s new container terminal, which is due to be operational in 2016. Two further batches of cranes are expected to arrive before the end of this year.
The port will be partially opened for specific types of ships and cargo by the end of 2015 and will be fully operational in late 2016 to increase the capacity of Doha port in order to cope with the volume of cargo being generated by the many projects underway in Qatar.
In another port development in Qatar, the Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) has announced the start of operations at a new berth at Lusaid, after the completion of an expansion project increasing the capacity of the bulk port to 3 million tonnes a year, to serve the needs of the large-scale construction sector in the city. The project included both the berth extension and the addition of new bulk handling equipment.
According to QPMC the port’s former capacity was about 500 tonnes per hour. With the expansion, the handling and unloading capacity of the port has risen to around 1000 tonnes an hour.
