The first of two 1200 passenger capacity vessels, with the ability to also transport up to 1000 tonnes of cargo, was launched recently at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Andaman & Nicobar Administration.
The 157m long vessel features an electric propulsion system and has been designed to meet Indian Register of Shipping and Lloyds Register classification society standards, as well as ‘safe return to port’ guidelines. The new ferry will now undergo outfitting at the yard, after which it will undergo testing and trials prior to delivery in 2021. The second sister vessel is also under construction at CSL, as are two 500 passenger capacity craft for inter-island operations also for the Andaman & Nicobar Administration.
The first of these smaller ships is scheduled to undergo sea trials next month and is expected to be delivered ‘ready-for-service’ to the islands in March, 2020. The second 500 passenger vessel is currently undergoing outfitting and will be ready for delivery to the islands in June this year.
