Following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the CMA CGM head office in Marseille, the 2592 TEU CMA CGM Vitoria has become the French carrier’s first-ever Indian-flagged vessel. The vessel was welcomed at the Nhava Sheva Free Port Terminal, operated by JM Baxi and CMA Terminals, on April 28th, in the presence of the Honourable Minister of State for Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India, Shri Shantanu Thakur, as well as key dignitaries from the Ministry, the Directorate General of Shipping, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and CMA CGM India staff members.
The CMA CGM Vitoria is deployed with the BIGEX service which connects India, the Gulf, and the Red Sea, with weekly calls from JNPT and Mundra ports.
This milestone marks a major step forward in CMA CGM’s broader ambition to strengthen its presence in India and play a key role in the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC). In addition to this first local flag registration in India, it is reported that CMA CGM plans to register three more vessels in India in the coming months.
With the decision to enter the CMA CGM Vitoria under the Indian flag, CMA CGM has also become the first foreign shipping line to register a container vessel in the Gujarat International Finance Tec (GIFT) City special economic zone in India.
