NIMR International and the Port of Duqm Company have signed a long-term bunkering agreement for the former to supply bunker fuel at the Omani port. NIMR will operate a fleet of dedicated bunkering barges with a total capacity of 5000 tonnes at Duqm initially, supplying marine gas oil (MGO), very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and marine lubricants to vessels calling the port and its dedicated anchorage areas.
At a later stage, the plan is for the company to add another bunker barge with a capacity of 7000 tonnes, as volumes increase.
NIMR International, which already supplies bunker fuel at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat, aims to provide an alternative to established international players. “It is a milestone and real privilege for our company to work with the Port of Duqm in promoting bunkering services. We are looking forward to increasing our market share by adding value into the supply chain,” commented Mahmood Al Habsi, Managing Director of NIMR.
The agreement with NIMR International underlines Duqm’s ambition to become a bunker hub serving the entire region. The port believes its strategic location will make it an attractive location for shipowners and operators to take on fuel.
In another important agreement, Dubai’s Tristar Group has acquired more than 11,000 m2 of land in the Port of Duqm for logistics purposes. It will build a new facility that will have a 3000m2 covered warehouse, with a 5000 pallet position capacity, and an open yard for future expansion.
Speaking at a recent lease agreement signing ceremony, Eugene Mayne, Group CEO of Tristar, said, “The expansion of our presence in Oman to Duqm further strengthens our value proposition as we continue to serve the future requirements of our international oil and gas customers as well as major local companies, with the highest level of operational and international safety standards. We constantly seek to build partnerships through which we can expand our service offering to our customers across the GCC and beyond, and the Port of Duqm provides us with the perfect platform to do so.”
