Aqaba Container Terminal and Aqaba Development Corporation have joined forces to manage and operate a hazardous materials yard in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone.
Through this collaboration, Aqaba Container Terminal will manage the first dedicated yard for dangerous goods in Aqaba on behalf of Aqaba Development Corporation, applying international standards in the handling and temporary storage of containers classified as hazardous. The yard boasts advanced features, including self-extinguishing equipment and safety and security measures to address potential risks of liquid leakage, ignition, or explosion.
Harald Nijhof, CEO of Aqaba Container Terminal, said, “This agreement underscores our unwavering commitment to ensuring the utmost safety and efficiency of port operations. By leveraging our expertise and resources, we are ready to set new benchmarks in handling dangerous goods, thereby contributing to the overall growth and prosperity of the Aqaba area.”
Aqaba Container Terminal has also recently announced that it has become the first terminal in the Middle East to use battery powered container handling equipment, as part of its strategy for becoming carbon neutral by 2040. The company has recently taken delivery of a reach stacker, empty handler and a terminal tractor unit, all powered entirely by electricity, and with a battery offering 8 hours of continuous operation before needing recharging.
