Abu Dhabi Ports (ADP) is transferring all of its ro-ro cargo from Mina Zayed to the new Khalifa Port. The move comes as a result of Abu Dhabi’s growing vehicle import and export business and will be effective from 1 January 2015.
Currently ADP’s ro-ro import and export activities primarily serve markets in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, but the extended space and capacity at Khalifa Port is expected to attract more ro-ro transshipment business for the wider Gulf region.
Whereas Mina Zayed can handle two ro-ro ships at a time, Khalifa port will be able to handle up to four vessels simultaneously. “By moving all of our ro-ro traffic to Khalifa, we can enhance our facilities and offer our customers a consolidated full service hub, supported by the adjacent Kizad logistics and distribution zone. We can develop and drive the growth of this important industry as demand for vehicles across the Emirate continues to grow, while developing our transshipment trade with other destinations”, says Capt. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Chief Executive Officer, ADP.
ADP’s latest figures underline the significant growth that has taken place this year in Abu Dhabi’s ro-ro business. A record 10,472 vehicles were handled at Mina Zayed in October, the highest number ever handled in a single month. Whereas in 2013 a total of 89,280 vehicles were imported to or exported from the emirate, this year volumes are expected to be in the region of 100,000 vehicles. In 2015 market analysis indicates that ADPC will handle over 130,000 vehicles at Khalifa.
